Iranian President Hopes to Sign "Major Agreement" with Russia at BRICS Summit

11 October

Tehran is hopeful that a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement with Moscow will be signed during the BRICS summit in Kazan. This was announced by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ashgabat.

"I hope we can conclude this agreement during the BRICS summit in Russia," Pezeshkian’s press service quoted him as saying.

The Iranian president also highlighted the close alignment between Iran and Russia, stating, "Compared to others, our positions are much more similar." The talks, held on the sidelines of the international forum "The Interconnection of Times and Civilizations - the Basis of Peace and Development" in Turkmenistan's capital, marked the first meeting between the presidents of Russia and Iran since Pezeshkian's election.

The comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, which has completed all the necessary procedures for signing, is expected to be a significant milestone in the development of relations between Russia and Iran. On September 18, the Russian president approved the draft agreement. On October 4, Iran's ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, confirmed that the document is ready for signing.

On July 8, just three days after his election, Pezeshkian expressed his readiness to sign the agreement during a phone call with Putin, aiming for October at the BRICS summit. Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s strong focus on its relationship with Russia, referring to the country as a "friend and neighbor." He also underscored the importance of cooperation between the two nations within BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
