Jordan to Hold Elections for the Lower House of Parliament

10 September

Jordan will hold elections for the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the National Assembly, with voting scheduled from 07:00 to 19:00 local time.

Musa al-Maaita, Chairman of the Independent Election Commission, announced that over 1,600 candidates will compete for 138 seats, with 5.1 million voters registered, including 2.6 million women.

Al-Maaita emphasized that these elections are key to modernizing Jordan's political system, a process championed by King Abdullah II. Despite regional unrest, including the conflict in Gaza, the elections are seen as vital for strengthening Jordan’s multiparty system. For the first time, 36 of 38 registered parties will participate, with 30% of parliamentary seats reserved for political parties, and this percentage is expected to increase to 60% in future elections.

Social Development Minister Wafaa Bani Mustafa highlighted reforms to enhance gender equality, with 18 parliamentary seats reserved for women, an increase from 15. Women can also run on party lists. Additionally, nine seats are reserved for Christian communities, and three for ethnic minorities such as Circassians and Chechens, reflecting Jordan’s commitment to inclusion and social harmony.
