Jordan's Foreign Minister arrives in Damascus

15 February 2023

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Hussein Abdullah al-Safadi arrived in the Syrian capital of Damascus on Wednesday, the Petra news agency reported.

According to it, the main purpose of the visit is to express Jordan's solidarity with Syria, which suffered from the recent earthquakes. The Syrian side confirmed al-Safadi's arrival in Damascus: Al-Watan daily reported that the Jordanian foreign minister was received by Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad.

In turn, Reuters noted that the visit of the Kingdom's foreign minister is the first since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011. The main topic of the talks, the agency's source stressed, will be Jordan's assistance to earthquake victims. After the visit to Damascus, al-Safadi will go to Turkey.

The 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes hit Kahramanmaras province in southeastern Turkey on February 6 at 9-hour intervals. Underground tremors followed by hundreds of aftershocks were also felt in neighboring countries, with Syria being the most affected. According to the Syrian ministry of health, the death toll in the government-controlled territory was 1,414, with another 2,349 affected people taken to hospitals.
