Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan report power outages

25 January 2022

Power supply disruptions have been reported in Kazakhstan’s largest city of Almaty and the Almaty region, the zakon.kz news outlet reported on Tuesday.

"Almaty and the Almaty region have power outages. Kazakhstan’s residents are reporting on social media that the country’s southern regions are also facing electricity shortages," the report says.

According to the Almaty administration, the outage was on the line of the Kazakhstan electric grid management company "Kegok". "The voltage in the network dropped, the automatic frequency unloading systems at the substations of JSC Alatau Zharyk Company [regional power transmission company] went off. Reconnection work has begun," the city authorities explained.

Outage in Kyrgyzstan

A TASS correspondent in Kyrgyzstan reports that most of Bishkek is de-energized and there is no electricity in the second-largest city of Osh and several other cities. In Bishkek, the heating is turned off and there is no water in some areas.

Mobile internet is not working for many users in the capital. According to a correspondent, the usual smoke is not visible from the chimney of the capital's thermal power plant. Government agencies have not yet explained the reasons for the incident.

Social networks say that there is no electricity in Osh, as well as in the regional center of Naryn and a number of settlements in the Chui region.

TASS reports that ATMs and cashless payment terminals in stores in Bishkek have stopped working. Banks also stopped processing transactions because of the internet's absence.

Situation in Uzbekistan

The energy ministry of Uzbekistan also reported power outages in several areas of the country.

"Today, January 25, at 11:00 a.m. (09:00 Moscow time) there was a major power outage in some regions of the country. Experts are now working to eliminate the malfunction," the statement said.

The ministry explained that part of the country was de-energized because of the power outages in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, as the three countries are connected to a single power grid.

According to the ministry, power was cut in Tashkent, Fergana and Fergana Valley, Syrdarya, Djizak, Samarkand, Navoi and Kashkadarya regions. "At present, measures are being taken to start up each TPP separately, to connect the staged networks passing through neighboring state grids," the report said.
