Kosachev: US strike on Syria could escalate the situation in the region

26 February 2021

An airstrike by the US on Syria could lead to an escalation of the military confrontation in the region and undermine the outlined normalization of the cooperation between Washington and Tehran on the nuclear deal. This opinion was expressed to journalists on Friday by Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs.

"Thus, this story escalates from strange to frankly dangerous, when it is possible both to escalate the military confrontation in the region and to disrupt the outlined normalization of the US-Iranian cooperation within the framework of the JCPOA," Kosachev said.

He noted that four states are involved in this situation - the US, Iraq, Iran and Syria. "But only one of them - the US - openly uses military force with state sanction. This is happening when the circumstances of the February 22 rocket attack on the "green zone" in Baghdad are not completely clear, when those responsible for this attack are appointed in the banalest way - from the geopolitical opponents. By doing so, the US once again arrogates to itself the right to investigate, sentence and execute it non-judicially and without observing the norms and principles of international law," said the senator.

The Pentagon said on Thursday that the US conducted "airstrikes on infrastructure used by pro-Iranian armed groups in eastern Syria" at the direction of President Joe Biden. The agency specified that "the strikes were in response to recent attacks against the US and coalition representatives in Iraq." According to the Pentagon, "the strikes destroyed several facilities located at checkpoints used by numerous pro-Iranian groups, including Qataib Hezbollah and Qataib Sayyid al-Shuhada.
