Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov denounced the recent military strikes conducted by the United States and the United Kingdom on Yemen, asserting their illegitimacy under international law.
"We condemn them," stated Peskov in response to queries about the strikes. "From the point of view of international law, they (the strikes - TASS) are illegitimate. This is what our position is," he added.
Peskov highlighted that the UN Security Council had previously adopted an American-drafted resolution condemning the attacks by Yemeni rebel Houthis in the Red Sea, urging an immediate cessation. While 11 Security Council members supported the resolution, four countries, including Russia, abstained.
"We abstained. And the countries that struck, they tried to put an international legal basis under their actions. This attempt failed, since the adopted resolution does not grant any right to strike," emphasized Peskov, shedding light on the diplomatic dynamics surrounding the situation.
In reference to the Houthis' attacks on international merchant ships, Peskov expressed Russia's repeated calls for the rebels to abandon such practices, deeming them highly inappropriate.
