Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov did not comment on the inauguration of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, saying that this is a sovereign, internal decision of the Belarusian leadership.

Presidential elections were held in Belarus on August 9. According to the CEC, Lukashenko won with 80.1% of the vote. According to the law, the inauguration of the President-elect must take place within two months from the election day. Press secretary of the President of Belarus Natalia Eismont previously told RIA Novosti that she did not yet name the date of his inauguration, but promised to do it "closer to the time" of the ceremony. However, on Wednesday, the state BelTA agency unexpectedly, without a preliminary announcement, reported that Lukashenko had assumed the post of President of Belarus. The inauguration ceremony was held in the Palace of Independence.

"I prefer not to comment here. This is an absolutely sovereign, internal decision of the Belarusian leadership. If it is accepted, it means that it was considered appropriate. I can't comment on this in any way, " Peskov told reporters.
