Kyrgyzstan plans joint construction of NPP with Russia

19 January 2023

Kyrgyzstan is considering the possibility of joint construction of a small capacity nuclear power plant with the Rosatom State Corporation on the territory of the Republic, Minister of Energy of Kyrgyzstan Taalaibek Ibrayev said on Thursday in the parliament of the republic.

"The possibility of building a small capacity nuclear power plant with Rosatom, which will consist of two power units of 55 MW each, is being studied," he said.

According to him, previously there was not an agreement with the Russian company on the joint construction of the NPP, but only a roadmap. Currently, the Russian side is studying the land plots of Kyrgyzstan, where the nuclear power plant may be built. The situation is complicated by the fact that almost the entire territory of the republic is located in a zone of high seismic danger.

Ibrayev predicts that if the parties approve the project, it will take about six to seven years for its construction.

Rosatom and Kyrgyzstan signed a memorandum on the project last January during Expo-2022 in the United Arab Emirates. The document emphasizes that the sides are interested in developing cooperation on the construction of small nuclear power plants based on the RITM-200N reactor plant in Kyrgyzstan.

The memorandum also envisages assistance in the development of the Kyrgyz nuclear infrastructure and joint work to improve the skills of scientific and technical personnel in various areas of peaceful uses of atomic energy.
