On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov briefed the delegation of the Arab League contact group on the genesis of the Ukrainian crisis on the margins of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
"Lavrov informed in detail about the genesis of the Ukrainian crisis as a result of the coup d'état supported by several Western countries in 2014 and the situation in Ukraine in the context of Russia's ongoing special military operation. At the same time, it was stressed that the unconditional priority for us is the protection of the civilian population of Donbass, the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
"The Russian side highly appreciated the League's balanced position on this issue, which was confirmed during the regular meeting of the Arab League Foreign Ministers Council in Cairo on September 6 this year," the diplomatic office added.
Besides, the parties stressed the importance of ongoing cooperation between Russia and the Arab League, including in the format of the Russian-Arab Cooperation Forum.
The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq, as well as Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
