Lavrov discusses settlement in Nagorno-Karabakh with Jordanian Foreign Minister

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement by phone with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, and the decisive role of Moscow in creating conditions for a ceasefire in the region was noted from the Jordanian side, a statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry reads.


"Sergey Lavrov informed his colleague at his request about the mediation efforts undertaken by Russia for a complete ceasefire and all military actions in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone since November 10. The Jordanian minister welcomed Russia's decisive role in creating conditions for ceasefire and transition to long-term settlement," the ministry said.


The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that a thorough exchange of views on key aspects of the regional agenda was held during the conversation. "The inadmissibility of unilateral approaches and the need to quickly create conditions for the resumption of direct Palestinian-Israeli dialogue on the basis of UN decisions and the Arab Peace Initiative were confirmed," Smolenskaya Square informed.


The Ministers also discussed the situation in and around Syria, including the tasks of facilitating the resolution of the problems of civilians, including in the context of the International Conference on Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons held in Damascus on November 11-12. The sides stressed the principled position of the political settlement in Syria, based on UNSC resolution 2254 and the decisions of the Congress of Syrian National Dialogue in Sochi.


"Topical issues of deepening Russian-Jordanian business relations were also touched upon with an emphasis on the implementation of the decisions of the fifth meeting of the joint Intergovernmental Commission for the Development of Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation, held on November 13-14, 2019 in Amman. The mutual mood for maintaining a high level of political interaction has been confirmed," the message says.


The conversation was initiated by the Jordanian side.
