Lavrov: Middle East on the Verge of Major Regional War

09 September

The Middle East is on the brink of a large-scale regional war, and Russia is actively engaging with all parties to prevent such an escalation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated during a meeting of the Strategic Dialogue between Russia and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Persian Gulf (GCC).

“The global community’s inability to halt the hostilities in the Gaza Strip and stop the mass civilian casualties has severely worsened the military and political situation across the region, stretching from the border of Lebanon and Israel to the Red Sea,” Lavrov explained. He added, “The confrontation between Israel and Lebanon has escalated to a new, dangerous level. The Middle East is once again on the verge of a major regional conflict, and it is our collective responsibility to prevent this.”

Lavrov emphasized that Russia is actively working with all sides to help de-escalate the situation.

“We are closely coordinating our actions both in the United Nations and on other platforms with our friends from the Cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Persian Gulf,” Lavrov noted.
