Russia is ready to provide maximum assistance to Libya for the purpose of national reconciliation in that country, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday at a meeting with Foreign Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya Mohamed Siala.
The Russian Foreign Minister noted that Libyans now have to make a historic choice in favor of ending fratricidal internecine strife, national reconciliation and joint construction of a stable state.
"Russia is sincerely interested in providing maximum assistance in solving all problems of your country. Today we will discuss the efforts that are being taken by the international community to support the Libyans; your assessments of the steps that need to be taken additionally are very important to us," Lavrov stressed.
In Libya, two executive bodies have existed in parallel for several years - the GNA of Fayez al-Sarraj in Tripoli and the interim cabinet supported by the parliament and the LNA. Haftar launched an attack on Tripoli in April 2019; in response, the capital's cabinet mobilized all the formations under its control, officially requesting help from Turkey on the basis of a memorandum of military cooperation signed with it. After that, with the active support of Ankara, it managed to regain control of a number of territories seized by the Haftarans.
