27 April 2020

The joint statement by Russian and US Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump on the anniversary of the Elbe meeting is a signal that the countries can unite for common goals, such as the fight against the coronavirus.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said a lecture to MGIMO students in a videoconference format.

Earlier, the presidents of the two countries adopted a joint statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the meeting of Soviet and American troops on the Elbe, the Kremlin press service reported.

"I hope that the crisis (caused by COVID-19-ed.) will encourage all players in world politics, first of all, the leading states, to put aside opportunistic differences and engage in joint work, professional work, in the name of ensuring a peaceful, prosperous future for all peoples. The promising signal was given by Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump. Yesterday, they issued a joint statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the meeting on the Elbe, where they stressed exactly this – that at that time, the Soviet Union and the United States were able to rise above differences, above contradictions and join forces for the sake of a battle, a decisive battle with a common enemy," RIA Novosti quotes, in particular, the head of Russian diplomacy.
