Lavrov: Russia expects US to fulfill its intention to return to Iran nuclear deal

Moscow expects that the US administration, which earlier announced its readiness to return to the Iran nuclear deal, will fulfill its intention after all, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Chinese media.

According to him, Washington, by withdrawing from the agreement, has not only stopped fulfilling its obligations but has banned all other countries from implementing the UN Security Council resolution. "In the West, it was generally perceived as 'well what can you do, this is how the United States decided; of course, it would be good if they continued to implement the resolution on the Iranian nuclear program, but this is the reality,'" the minister pointed out.

"But this is not reality, but a flagrant violation of international law, a demonstration of the state's complete lack of agreement," Lavrov stressed. - "I hope that now the US administration, which has expressed its desire to return to the nuclear deal, will fulfill its intention".

The previous US President Donald Trump decided in 2018 to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran. The JCPOA was signed with Iran by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany in 2015 to resolve the crisis over Tehran's nuclear developments. US President Joe Biden has repeatedly signaled his willingness to bring the US back into the nuclear deal with Iran. Nevertheless, so far the US government has made virtually no significant steps in this direction.
