Lavrov: Russia seeks to open training centers for migrant workers in CIS countries

26 January 2022

Moscow insists on opening centers for the organized training of migrant workers in countries from which the largest number of them are sent to Russia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday, speaking at a government hour during a plenary session of the State Duma.

"Now we insist [on opening such centers], with the countries that provide the bulk of migrant workers, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, we agree with them to organize training centers for migrant workers in these countries," he said. According to the minister, such centers could train migrants in the Russian language and knowledge of Russian law.

Lavrov noted that the situation with migrants, particularly when it comes to incidents involving them, causes an emotional reaction in society. He noted that this problem is now given very serious attention through the ministry of internal affairs. "It's clear that today these processes cause mixed reactions in the society. We see how emotionally various incidents with the participation of migrant workers from our neighboring republics are perceived," he added.

At the same time, the Russian foreign minister noted that the issue of labor migration in Russia cannot be compared with labor migrants working in the UAE or Qatar, as people who come from the CIS used to be citizens of a single state. "In our case, it is still a very fresh historical event, which can be evaluated in different ways, but which, of course, had a negative impact on the lives of ordinary people, including those who are used to moving around their large, united homeland in search of work," concluded the minister.
