Lavrov says relations with Iran will not depend on US "whims"

Relations between Moscow and Tehran will not depend on the "whims" of the United States, which is trying to damage the partnership between the two countries by imposing illegal sanctions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Tuesday.

"Our relations are developing based on the interests of two states, two peoples, and we are building our plans without looking back at any third party," Lavrov said following talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

He added that certain international players are trying in illegitimate ways to limit mutually beneficial cooperation between Moscow and Tehran by "abusing" unilateral restrictions that contradict international law.

"We perceive this as illegitimate attempts, as far as the US is concerned, under the past administration, to abuse its ability to give extraterritoriality to its national legislation. And in this situation, of course, we choose forms of cooperation, partnerships that will not depend on the whims of this or that violator of international law," Lavrov added.
