The Syrian settlement process is steadily progressing despite the  coronavirus pandemic. This was stated in the opening speech of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen.

"We see that, despite the objective difficulties, first of all, the coronavirus pandemic, the process of Syrian settlement is steadily moving forward," Lavrov said. - "We also see additional needs to intensify efforts for a political settlement, we see the steps you are taking to resume the activities of the Constitutional Committee as soon as possible. We expect that those plans that we agreed with the Syrian parties, including in Damascus, are still being implemented".

The head of the Foreign Ministry said that the situation in a large part of Syria had stabilized, but there were still hotbeds of terrorism in the republic and the fight against them remains relevant.

"Now the tasks of establishing peaceful life in the country, humanitarian assistance to civilians and, of course, creating conditions for the return of refugees are gradually coming to the foreground. The international conference held in Damascus was devoted to this issue," Lavrov emphasized.

The Minister also pointed out the need to further activate the mechanisms of political settlement of the Syrian crisis.
