On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will hold talks in Moscow with his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, who has been in Russia since September 15. The discussions are expected to focus on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as addressing key bilateral and regional issues.
Egypt’s ambassador to Moscow, Nazih el Nagari, emphasized the importance of the Middle East situation in the talks. “The situation in Palestine and Gaza is of primary importance to us, as well as the broader regional context, including Libya and Sudan,” el Nagari said.
This meeting follows earlier talks between Lavrov and Abdelatty in August, during which they discussed solutions to the escalating Palestinian-Israeli conflict. That conversation came after the assassinations of Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas's political bureau, in Tehran, and of Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah military commander, in Beirut. Both ministers underscored the urgent need for a ceasefire and de-escalation.
Bilateral Relations
This visit marks Abdelatty's first trip to Russia as Egypt’s foreign minister, a role he assumed in July, succeeding Sameh Shoukry, who served for the past decade. Strengthening bilateral ties will be a major focus of the talks. “This is Mr. Abdelatty’s first meeting with Lavrov as foreign minister. The relationship between Moscow and Cairo, as well as our shared projects, are of great importance,” el Nagari noted.
The Egyptian foreign ministry also stressed the importance of the visit for enhancing ties with Russia. Abdelatty is scheduled to meet with several senior Russian officials to discuss matters of mutual interest.
Diplomatic relations between Cairo and Moscow have been maintained for 80 years. Since Egypt’s entry into the BRICS group on January 1, 2024, cooperation between the two nations has deepened. In the past six months, Egypt has actively participated in BRICS-related events in Russia. For instance, former Foreign Minister Shoukry led the Egyptian delegation at a BRICS foreign ministers' meeting in Nizhny Novgorod in June. Egyptian journalists and media leaders are also present at the BRICS Media Summit in Moscow, where Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development and Egypt’s Supreme Council for Media Regulation signed a memorandum of understanding.
