Lavrov to take part in meeting of CIS foreign ministers in Astana on October 12

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part in a meeting of CIS foreign ministers in Astana on October 12, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Thursday during a briefing.


"On October 12, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part in the regular meeting of the Council of CIS foreign ministers. It will be held in Astana. The foreign ministers of the CIS countries will exchange opinions on current international and regional issues, prospects for cooperation in the organization and approve a plan for multilevel inter-ministerial consultations within the CIS in 2023," she said.


According to Zakharova, during the meeting Lavrov will inform the partners about the course of the CIS and the results of the referendums on the accession of the four regions. "Particular attention is planned to be paid to security issues in the Commonwealth and its external borders. The Russian foreign minister [Sergey Lavrov] will inform partners about the course of the special military operation, the results of referendums in the DNR, LNR, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, and the accession of these territories to Russia," the diplomat pointed out.


The official representative of the foreign ministry drew attention to the fact that during the meeting a number of decisions "in the cultural, humanitarian, law enforcement and human rights spheres" are expected to be made. "In particular, the action plan for the Year of the Russian language as a language of interethnic communication in the CIS in 2023 and the plan of priority measures in the field of humanitarian cooperation of the member states of the organization for the period 2023-2024," she added.


Zakharova reported that "part of the approved documents will be submitted for consideration by the Council of the CIS heads of state scheduled for October 14 and the Council of the CIS heads of government, which will take place on October 28.
