Lavrov Warns of Gaza's Uninhabitable Future, Citing Expert Assessments

24 January

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking at the UN Security Council's open debate on the Middle East situation, drew attention to expert assessments indicating that the Gaza Strip may hardly ever be habitable. Referring to an article in the Jerusalem Post, Lavrov mentioned assessments by environmental experts, including Israelis, raising doubts about Gaza's livability after the conflict.

Lavrov emphasized the severe environmental impact of the conflict, stating that the soil, groundwater, coastal sea area, and atmosphere have already been extensively polluted by the products of explosions and combustion. He highlighted the disappearance of natural sources of drinking water, near-destruction of sewage infrastructure, and an estimated 22% of agricultural land that may never be restored.
