Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced that he will visit Vladivostok in a few weeks to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“I will travel to Vladivostok at the invitation of President Putin to discuss economic cooperation and to position Malaysia as a country that maintains an independent stance without hostility,” Ibrahim told the Bernama news agency.
The visit coincides with the Eastern Economic Forum, which will be held in Vladivostok from September 3-6, and is traditionally attended by the Russian president.
On July 28, Ibrahim revealed that Malaysia had applied to join BRICS. He had previously met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and the discussions focused primarily on Malaysia’s application to the BRICS group. Ibrahim noted that joining BRICS could hold "significant potential for both countries." Lavrov stated that Russia, as BRICS chair, would support Malaysia’s interest in becoming a member.
