Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko and Speaker of the Senate of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva held talks on the margins of the Nevsky Ecological Congress held in St. Petersburg.
"First of all I want to congratulate you on the success of the constitutional reform, I think this is a great event for Uzbekistan. The results of the referendum showed that the people of the country absolutely support the policy of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. This support means a lot, it gives the president a mandate to continue the country's active development," Matviyenko said during the talks, which were broadcast live on the Federation Council website.
She also noted that in accordance with the updated constitution, the president of Uzbekistan has issued a decree on the early presidential elections, scheduled for July 9. Matviyenko promised that "all organizational measures will be taken to provide citizens of Uzbekistan, currently residing in Russia, with the opportunity to freely express their will and participate in the election." According to her, if Uzbekistan requests it, the Federation Council will send its representatives to monitor the presidential campaign.
"We will be glad to send our representatives and will assess the process of voting professionally, fairly and honestly as we always do," Matviyenko said.
In her turn, Narbayeva thanked Matviyenko for the invitation to the most important environmental forum regularly held within the IPA CIS framework since 2008. She noted that the event is a very good platform for exchanging experience in the environmental sphere.
