Media: Pakistan increased security along border with Afghanistan

18 February 2022

Pakistan in February increased  security along its western border with Afghanistan due to incessant terrorist attacks from Afghan territory, the Express Tribune reported on Friday, citing sources in Pakistan's defense ministry.

"Militant attacks have undermined hopes for peace and stability on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border since the Taliban (banned in Russia) came to power in Kabul," the sources said. - "Pakistan's Armed Forces have intensified reconnaissance and troop operations along the Afghan border in recent weeks after a spate of militant attacks".

At least 14 Pakistani soldiers have been killed by infiltrators from Afghanistan in the past month, the Pakistani military said.

For security reasons, Pakistan is continuing to build engineered fences along its border with Afghanistan, as well as introducing a strict system of border control, sources said. Earlier, Pakistani Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmad said that the fencing on the border with Afghanistan was more than 90 percent complete.

Pakistan began engineering the 2,611-kilometer border with Afghanistan in 2017 to prevent cross-border terrorism and infiltration into Pakistani territory by militants of the radical Tehreek-e-Pakistan. To date, fences and 388 firing points for border guards have been built along more than 800 km of the border.
