Media: Turkey's Participation in BRICS Summit Marks Turning Point

22 October

Turkey’s involvement in the BRICS summit in Kazan represents a significant turning point for the country’s economic development and foreign trade relations, according to Turkish newspaper columnist Necmettin Batirel of Türkiye.

Batirel asserts that Ankara’s potential entry into BRICS does not mean it has given up hope of joining the European Union. However, this move would send a strong message to Europe, which has long blocked Turkey’s membership. He describes the timing of Turkey's interest in BRICS as “perfect,” noting the European economy's severe strain due to the war in Ukraine. With Germany on the brink of recession and the eurozone’s growth rates alarmingly low, Europe faces industrial closures and 11 million unemployed citizens.

Meanwhile, Batirel highlights the rapid recovery in the Asia-Pacific region and the emergence of a new economic order, which Turkey seeks to become a part of. Unlike the EU, BRICS offers Ankara a streamlined process of accession without the need for institutional formalities, yet with full voting rights in decision-making processes.

Batirel emphasizes that the Kazan BRICS summit is a “turning point for Turkey,” especially as the Turkish economy, driven by high interest rates, is pursuing an export-led growth model. Joining BRICS as a full member would open up new markets and offer significant investment opportunities for Turkey.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to arrive in Kazan on October 23, where he will hold bilateral meetings, including talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Turkey has previously expressed interest in joining BRICS, recognizing the group’s potential for enhancing its trade and economic prospects.
