Minister of Energy of Saudi Arabia compared relations with Russia with family

15 April 2020

Saudi Energy Minister Abdel Aziz bin Salman compared the "oil" differences with Russia to the problems that arise in any family and make it even stronger.

"I wouldn't call it a divorce. As in any family, its members have disagreements. But usually, families do not wash their dirty linen in public, and quarrels always are resolved. You know, it all depends on how strong the connection is in the family, and in this family it is strong. And overcoming differences makes any family even stronger... So, as I said, we're family. And as a family, we are now more resilient to any potential spats that may arise in the future," he said, in particular, in an interview for Bloomberg TV.

In March, OPEC+ could not agree on the volume of reducing oil production, prices for which have significantly decreased, including due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Russia offered to extend the agreement on current terms, and Saudi Arabia insisted on increasing the reduction in oil production by 1.5 million barrels per day.

On April 12, the Alliance members were able to agree on a reduction of 9.7 million barrels per day in May-June, 7.7 million in the second half of the year and 5.8 million by the end of April 2022.
