05 October 2023

Deputy Chairman of the FC Committee on International Affairs Farit Mukhametshin conducted a meeting with a delegation from the International Islamic University of Malaysia, led by Rector Dzulkifli Abdul Razak. During the meeting, the senator highlighted that Russian-Malaysian cooperation is grounded in mutual trust and respect. He also emphasized the shared spiritual and moral values of the two nations.

Farit Mukhametshin mentioned that in May of this year, during the International Economic Forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum," a productive session titled "Russia - Malaysia" took place. He noted that this session saw active participation from Russian senators and served as a platform for discussing key aspects of their mutual relations. Among the topics discussed were investment cooperation and the development of collaboration in scientific, technical, educational, cultural, and humanitarian fields, including tourism.

Discussing the advancement of bilateral trade and economic collaboration, the parliamentarian pointed out that a significant hurdle in this regard is the absence of a free trade agreement between the two nations. He emphasized that there are mutually advantageous opportunities for enhancing cooperation between Russia and Malaysia. Russia is keen on developing high-tech and innovative sectors, exchanging expertise in establishing special economic zones and technology parks, strengthening ties in the oil and gas industry, and expanding cooperation in nuclear energy, among other areas, as highlighted by Farit Mukhametshin.

The senator mentioned that ongoing efforts are being made to finalize drafts of an interagency memorandum of understanding in the field of higher education, along with an intergovernmental agreement for the mutual recognition of education, qualifications, and degrees. Additionally, he emphasized the significance of expanding the exchange of students and faculty members between the two countries.

"Collaboration between prominent universities in Malaysia and Russia holds great significance as it enables the exchange of insights into educating young individuals. The primary focus is on cultivating contemporary talent, which is in demand within our respective nations today," Farit Mukhametshin emphasized.

The senator expressed a strong appreciation for the International Islamic University of Malaysia's efforts in forging connections with Russian universities. "We are fully prepared to extend our active support in this endeavor," he stated. He further mentioned plans to invite university representatives to take an active part in international events hosted by Russian universities and the Strategic Vision Group "Russia - Islamic World."

On his part, Dzulkifli Abdul Razak expressed his support for the continued and active development of relations between Malaysia and Russia, particularly in the realms of education and science.
