Iraqi Prime Minister-designate Mohammed al-Sudani received Russian Ambassador Elbrus Kutrashev on Thursday. This is stated in a message distributed by the office of the Iraqi prime minister.
It noted that during the meeting, al-Sudani "expressed the interest of the future [Iraqi] government in strengthening bilateral ties with the Russian Federation and building balanced relations in the interests of the two friendly peoples."
He also "praised the historic relations linking Iraq and Russia, confirming the determination of the future government to activate the prospects of bilateral cooperation in various fields."
In turn, Kutrashev, on behalf of the Russian leadership, congratulated al-Sudani on his appointment as head of the Iraqi government, wishing him good luck and success. The ambassador also expressed hope for the further development of Russian-Iraqi ties.
On October 13, the Iraqi Council of Representatives elected Abdul Latif Rashid as the country's new president. He also appointed al-Sudani as prime minister, tasking him with forming the future cabinet. According to al-Sudani, he intends to create "a strong government capable of maintaining security and stability, building the country and balancing relations in the international arena."
