No Gasoline-Powered Cars Allowed in Indonesia's New Capital

12 August

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has announced that gasoline-powered cars will be banned in the country's new capital, Nusantara. According to the Detik portal, Widodo emphasized the green vision for Nusantara, stating, "The economy that will be developed in the capital Nusantara is a green economy. Everything that will be made will be green."

He further clarified, "Electric cars will be used as vehicles. Internal combustion engine vehicles that run on gasoline will indeed be banned in Nusantara because its concept is a green city."

The plan to relocate Indonesia's capital from Jakarta to a new city on the island of Kalimantan was first proposed in 2019. Initially slated for completion by 2024 with an investment of nearly $32 billion, the project was delayed due to the pandemic. In January 2022, Widodo officially named the new capital Nusantara, meaning "archipelago."

Although Widodo visited Nusantara in late July 2024, he returned to Jakarta shortly after, where the government currently remains. President-elect Prabowo Subianto has expressed enthusiasm for completing Nusantara and is prepared to relocate there.
