No Reports of Russians Injured in Bangladesh, Confirms Embassy

22 July

The Russian embassy in Dhaka has reported that there is no information indicating that Russian citizens have been injured during the mass protests in Bangladesh. This was conveyed to a TASS correspondent by a representative of the embassy.

"There is no information that Russian citizens have suffered during the mass protests. The embassy is closely monitoring the situation," the embassy representative stated.

The situation remains calm at the Ruppur nuclear power plant construction site, where many Russian citizens are working. "Everything is calm at the Ruppur NPP construction site. There are no protests there," the spokesperson confirmed.

In the capital Dhaka, where the Russian embassy is located, the situation is also reported to be calm. "A curfew is in force in the city. The situation is calm now, including in the area of the Russian embassy," the representative added.

The protests in Bangladesh began earlier this month following objections by hundreds of students from private and public universities against employment quotas for relatives of freedom fighters from the 1971 war of independence. These quotas were deemed discriminatory. Nearly 32 million young people are unemployed or lack vocational training in the country of 170 million people. They believe the authorities are not adequately addressing unemployment and are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Due to the protests, internet and TV channels have been cut off, and communications are intermittent. Troops have been deployed in Dhaka and other cities, and a curfew is in effect. More than 150 people, including police officers, have been killed in the riots.
