11 August 2023

The number of reported cases of dengue fever in Bangladesh has risen to 2,959 since the start of the year. Within the last 24 hours alone, the capital city Dhaka has reported 1,097 new cases of infection, as stated by the country's health service office, reported the Xinhua news agency.

Tragically, twelve individuals within the nation have succumbed to the fever in the past day. This brings the death toll for August to 113 and to 204 for the previous month of July. Consequently, the total fatalities from the disease in Bangladesh this year have reached 364.

While the government has yet to officially declare it, local health experts assert that the infection has reached a peak level and has attained epidemic proportions. In the year 2022, Bangladesh reported 281 deaths due to dengue.

Dengue fever is particularly prevalent in countries characterized by tropical and subtropical climates. Female mosquitoes serve as vectors for the virus. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that dengue has been rapidly spreading in various WHO regions in recent times. The infection's annual occurrence is estimated to range between 100 and 400 million cases.  WHO notes that over 80% of cases tend to be mild or asymptomatic. However, the virus can lead to an acute flu-like ailment that may progress into potentially fatal complications.
