Nurlan Nigmatulin re-elected as speaker of the Majilis of Kazakhstan

Nurlan Nigmatulin who held this post in the parliament of the last convocation was re-elected as Speaker of the Majilis (lower chamber) of the Kazakh parliament during the first plenary session of the deputies of the seventh convocation, the RIA Novosti correspondent reports.


The Nur Otan party led by former president Nursultan Nazarbayev won the elections to the Majilis (lower house) of the parliament of the country, which were held in Kazakhstan on January 10, with 71.09% of the vote. Nazarbayev's eldest daughter, Dariga Nazarbayeva, and Nurlan Nigmatulin, the previous Majilis speaker, are among the 76 deputies on the Nur Otan party list. On Thursday, Nigmatulin was re-elected as head of the Nur Otan party faction in parliament; the faction also offered to re-elect him as speaker of the chamber, a post he has held since June 2016.


"One candidate was nominated for the post of chairman of the Majilis - Nurlan Nigmatulin," said Berik Imashev, head of the republic's CEC, who is present at the chamber's meeting.


Following a secret ballot, Majilis deputies elected Nigmatulin as speaker of the chamber.
