Pakistan assessed the prospects of Sputnik V production

07 April 2021

Pakistan is interested in producing the Russian Sputnik V vaccine on its territory and is ready to order another batch of the drug, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Qureshi said.

"I think there are opportunities for local production (of the Sputnik V vaccine - ed.) and a joint venture," the Minister said during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

He noted that the Sputnik V vaccine shows good results and Pakistan is interested in acquiring another batch of the drug.

In February this year, the Pakistan Drug Control Authority approved the use of Sputnik V. The vaccine was registered in that country under an emergency use authorization based on the data from the clinical trials of Sputnik V in Russia.

The Sputnik V vaccine has been approved in almost 60 countries with a total population of over 1.5 billion people. Sputnik V has the second highest number of approvals by government regulators in the world.

The scientific journal Lancet in early February published the results of Phase III clinical trials of the Sputnik V vaccine confirming its high efficacy and safety. During Phase III clinical trials, Sputnik V demonstrated high rates of efficacy, immunogenicity and safety - the effectiveness of the vaccine was 91.6%. The vaccine provides complete protection against severe cases of new coronavirus infection.
