Parliament of Kazakhstan approves agreement with Kyrgyzstan on military and technical assistance

26 May 2022

The Senate (upper house) of the parliament of Kazakhstan on Thursday approved an agreement with the government of Kyrgyzstan on providing gratuitous military-technical assistance to ensure security in the Central Asian region. The session is being broadcast on the legislative body's website.

The agreement between the two countries' cabinets was signed in Nur-Sultan on December 7, 2021. According to the document, Kazakhstan provides military-technical assistance to Kyrgyzstan in the form of one-time gratuitous transfer of military property in order to ensure the security and defense potential of Central Asia.

The items and volumes of military equipment are to be agreed through diplomatic channels by authorized agencies of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Under the agreement, Kazakhstan will deliver military materiel by road from its territory to the village of Koy-Tash in Kyrgyzstan. However, Kyrgyzstan must not transfer military materiel to a third party and must not use it against member states of the CIS.

After the Senate's approval, the agreement will go to the president of Kazakhstan for his signature.

In early December of last year, Kazakhstan approved an agreement with Kyrgyzstan to provide it with gratuitous military-technical assistance - a one-time transfer of ammunition and special equipment.
