Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the IAEA urged Iran to give up emotions in the matter of the agency's work

30 November 2020

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia's Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna, calls on the Iranian authorities not to give in to emotions when deciding on the presence and work of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors in the country. He stated this in connection with the intention of Iranian parliamentarians to limit the inspection activities of the Agency against the background of the murder of nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

"In connection with the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist, IRI parliamentarians called to stop using the Additional Protocol and limit the IAEA inspection activities in Iran. Motives are understandable, but emotions do not always help to find the right solution. The Additional Protocol is in the interests of everyone, including Tehran," Ulyanov wrote on his Twitter page.

Earlier, as reported by Al Arabiya TV channel, the head of Iran's parliamentary committee on energy Fereydoon Abbasi said that the committee he heads in the field of legislative activity intends to focus on four objectives: start uranium enrichment to 20 percent, remove (from the territory of Iran) all IAEA inspectors, stop cooperation with the agency and ensure Iran's complete withdrawal from the nuclear deal. As part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for Iran's Nuclear Program (JCPOA), Tehran committed itself to not enriching uranium to more than 3.67 percent within 15 years, and IAEA inspectors monitored compliance with this and other terms of the deal.

On Sunday, the Iranian Majlis (parliament) voted to expedite consideration of a bill that would increase the level of uranium enrichment in the country.
