09 September 2020

Presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Vladimir Putin plans to focus his speech at the 75th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly on the challenge posed to the world by the coronavirus pandemic.

"What can we talk about now when speaking to the UN? This is about the unprecedented challenge that the pandemic has thrown at us. And about the many ills of humanity that this pandemic has exacerbated. Definitely, about this, " Peskov said, answering the question of what topics the President plans to address in his speech.

According to Peskov, the Russian President will not fly to New York for the session of the UN GA, as the epidemiological situation in the United States has not yet leveled off.

"The President, for obvious reasons, will not come [to the session of the UN General Assembly], like many other leaders. Still, in terms of the level of security, including epidemiological security, for the President and the head of state, the situation has not leveled off yet, especially in a place like New York. Therefore, of course, a trip there is not desirable now, " Peskov said.

Earlier, Peskov told reporters that Putin would speak at the 75th anniversary session of the UN General Assembly in the format of a video message. According to the preliminary program of speeches at the General political debates distributed at the UN on September 1, Putin can speak at the UN General Assembly session on September 22. In the preliminary program, the Russian leader is listed seventh in the list of speakers. He is expected to be preceded by speeches from the heads of Brazil, the United States, Turkey, China, Chile and Cuba. On the same day, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and French President Emmanuel Macron are planning to address the General Assembly.

This year's high-level week will be held from September 22 to 29, mostly in a virtual format. At the moment, US President Donald Trump and Secretary-General of the organization Antonio Guterres have announced a possible personal presence at the UN.
