16 June 2020

The President of Kyrgyzstan  Sooronbai Jeenbekov accepted on Tuesday the resignation of Prime Minister Mukhammedkuli Abylgaziev, the press service of the head of the Kyrgyz state reports.

"The President of the Kyrgyz Republic signed a decree accepting the resignation of the Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic. The government of the Kyrgyz Republic is also considered to have resigned, " the report says.

According to the press service, in accordance with the decree of Jeenbekov, "persons who held the positions of Prime Minister, first Deputy Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Ministers, members of the government" will continue to perform the duties of members of the Cabinet "according to their previous positions until the formation of a new government."

Abylgaziev, who headed the government of Kyrgyzstan for more than two years, voluntarily resigned on June 15. "In today's difficult conditions, when the country is facing the threat of the coronavirus infection and struggling with its consequences for the economy, the government must work steadily and enjoy the full confidence of citizens. The situation of uncertainty hinders the full-fledged work of the government. Based on these considerations, I decided to resign as Prime Minister," he said. In May, the now-former Prime Minister was suspected of involvement in a deal to sell radio frequencies, after which he took a leave of absence so as not to interfere with the investigation.

On May 20, Zhanar Akayev, a member of the Kyrgyz Parliament, accused Abylgaziev of involvement in corruption in the State Communications Agency, which controlled the sale of radio frequencies by Ala-TV to one of the national mobile operators. Later, these radio frequencies were resold for several times more expensive. The MP believes that without the participation of the Prime Minister, the decision to sell radio frequencies in the country is not taken. Law enforcement agencies in Kyrgyzstan almost immediately launched a pre-trial investigation into the case, which has already detained the former head of the State Communications Agency and the Director of Ala-TV.
