On Tuesday, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov signed a decree on convening the first People's Kurultai (congress) in the country's history, the press service of the head of state informs.

As the press service explained, citizens of the republic have the right to participate in the management of the affairs of society and the state both "directly and through their representatives." "Citizens have the right to hold kurultais, which are a historical tradition of the Kyrgyz, on the activities of state bodies and local governments and on other important issues. The People's Kurultai is a public representative, deliberative, supervisory assembly, which gives recommendations on the directions of social development," the text says.
The press service specified that the president took this decision for the purpose of further strengthening of interethnic harmony, consolidation of civil society and promotion of social mobilization in the republic as well as in consideration of the fact that the country stands "on the threshold of new global and regional challenges and problems whose solution requires participation of all the local communities through their representatives."
According to Zhaparov's decision, the first People's Kurultai will be held on November 25 in Bishkek. Secretary of State Suyunbek Kasmambetov headed the organizing committee.
According to Kyrgyz law, the People's Kurultai has the status of a deliberative body.
