Lebanese President Michel Aoun accepted the resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab and his government on Monday, the press service of the head of state reports.
"The Prime Minister [Hassan] Diab handed a written resignation letter to President [Michel] Aoun, who accepted it and instructed the Cabinet to carry out its duties until the new government is formed," the report says. During the conversation, Aoun and Diab discussed the latest developments in Lebanon after the explosion at the Beirut seaport on August 4. The head of state thanked the members of the resigned government for their work.
"God preserve Lebanon!" said Diab as he left the Palace. Earlier, in his farewell speech, the resigned Prime Minister said that "the system of corruption was stronger than the Lebanese state." "We did not pursue any personal ambitions and sought only to save our country, but the circles that had been in power for 30 years, launched a campaign against the government and turned the people against it," he said.
Diab explained that his move hopes to open the door to an internal political settlement in Lebanon.
The technocrat Cabinet was formed on January 21 and received a vote of confidence on February 11. Diab's government was backed by a parliamentary majority led by the Pro - presidential Free Patriotic Movement and the Shia Amal-Hezbollah tandem. The parties of the pro-Western camp refused to participate in the Cabinet and moved to the opposition.
