The Russian military base in Tajikistan is one of the significant elements of security in the region, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday at a meeting with Tajik leader Emomali Rahmon.
"Our military base, which you and I created in our time, it is still developing, it is one of the significant elements of security in the region. I know you are also in constant contact with our military, you control the situation, you help our troops there in order for them to live in normal conditions," the Russian head of state said, referring to his counterpart.
Putin expressed confidence that the countries will keep working in this direction.
He also noted that the situation on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border is worrying and alarming.
"The situation on the border with Afghanistan - I know, we are in constant contact with you - is alarming. This is an objective circumstance, and I share this concern," said the Russian president.
He added that in general, Russia and Tajikistan are actively developing their relations on security issues. "We are actively working to strengthen Tajikistan's defense capabilities. Recently, in accordance with our agreements, the necessary supplies of weapons and equipment have been made in order to strengthen Tajikistan's armed forces so that Tajikistan could effectively counter any threats that come from outside against your country," summarized the Russian president.
