Russian President Vladimir Putin held a separate meeting on Thursday on the margins of the multilateral summit in Astana with Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

The agenda of the conversation includes bilateral cooperation in the political, trade and investment, sports, humanitarian and other areas. A number of international topics, including the situation on the global energy market as well as activity of joint working group on preparation for the FIFA World Cup, which will be held in Qatar at the end of the year, were also discussed during the meeting.

From the Russian side, the talks are also attended by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Gazprom head Alexei Miller, Rosneft head Igor Sechin, Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev and VTB bank head Andrei Kostin.

The Russian side arrived in the negotiating hall ahead of the Qatari delegation.

Al Thani became emir of Qatar in 2013. Since then, he has met with Putin more than once. In 2014, their talks were held in Sochi, and in 2016 and 2018, the emir came to Moscow. The current meeting takes place in Astana on the margins of the summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.

Two days earlier, Putin met with Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, leader of another Middle Eastern country, the United Arab Emirates. Russia is also engaged in dialogue with other states in the region, including Saudi Arabia.
