Russia has signed a contract to implement the first phase of joint production of Kalashnikov rifles with Saudi Arabia, Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov said in an interview with the Kommersant newspaper published on Saturday.

"As for the contract for the implementation of the first stage of the creation of a joint production of Kalashnikov rifles, it has been signed by the parties and is undergoing interstate approval procedures, after which it will come into force," Manturov said.

Earlier, Dmitry Tarasov, the CEO of Kalashnikov, told RBC in an interview that Kalashnikov is ready to work with Saudi Arabia on the production of AK-103 assault rifles, which was approved in a memorandum dated October 2017. He noted that the delay in its execution was caused by the pandemic of a new type of coronavirus COVID-19.
