Russia and UN Stress Need to Stabilize the Situation in Syria

13 December

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin and UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen discussed advancing the political resolution process in Syria. This was highlighted in a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry following their phone conversation.

“The discussions focused on advancing a political settlement process driven and implemented by Syrians themselves, with UN support, based on respect for Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254,” the ministry stated.

They also addressed the current situation in Syria, including the risks of escalating tensions across the broader Middle East region.

Both parties reaffirmed the urgency of “taking immediate measures to stabilize the situation within and around the country and to ensure security and order.”
