After the end of the UN and African Union peacekeeping operation in Sudan's Darfur, priority should be given to overcoming social and economic problems, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Anna Evstigneeva said on Tuesday at the UN Security Council meeting.
She expressed confidence that the winding down of the Joint African Union-UN peacekeeping operation in Darfur had successfully coped with its tasks. "Now is the time to prioritize reconstruction and economic development in the region," the diplomat stressed.
"Sudan now faces many challenges," she noted. - "Events in neighboring Libya, the growing number of refugees from African states, as well as the spread of COVID-19 are adversely affecting the situation. Socio-economic challenges remain to be overcome."
"In these circumstances, we attach great importance to maintaining balanced contacts with the Sudanese authorities, assisting their efforts to implement the Constitutional Declaration of August 17, 2019, aimed at internal stabilization," Evstigneeva concluded.
