Russia Condemns Assassination of Hamas Leader as Regional Provocation

01 August

Russia has condemned the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas politburo, which occurred in Tehran. Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, described the attack as a provocative move aimed at drawing Iran into a regional conflict.

“Russia strongly condemns the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in a missile attack on his residence in Tehran on the night of July 31,” Polyanskiy stated during a UN Security Council meeting. He highlighted that Haniyeh was in Iran on an official invitation to attend the inauguration of Iranian President-elect Massoud Pezeshkian at the time of the attack. Polyanskiy warned that such actions could destabilize the already tense regional atmosphere.

He also criticized the practice of targeted killings of high-profile figures, comparing it to the dangerous escalation in January 2020, when the US killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and Iraqi officials. Polyanskiy lamented that the lack of lessons learned from past incidents has led to continued instability in the region, with the US setting a troubling example for others.
