Moscow condemns the US overnight strike in Syria and considers it an unacceptable violation of international law, a source at the Russian Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti.
Earlier, the Pentagon announced that as a result of the airstrike in Syria, a number of infrastructure facilities of Shiite groups supported by Iran were destroyed. The move, the Pentagon noted, was a response to the recent attacks on the American and coalition forces in Iraq. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the US military relied on intelligence information from the Iraqi side and was confident in the accuracy of the strike.
"The strike was carried out on the territory of a sovereign UN member state. This is an unacceptable violation of international law. We have to figure out who they were hitting," the agency's interlocutor said.
According to him, Iran in Syria "together with the regular army is fighting against militants of ISIS (banned in the Russian Federation)".
"They are there to help the legitimate government and people of Syria to fight the terrorists," the interlocutor stressed.
