Russia Demands Renewed Probe into British War Crimes in Afghanistan

18 July

Russia has called for a renewed and objective investigation into war crimes committed by British forces in Afghanistan, citing recent journalistic reports detailing extrajudicial killings of civilians, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, told a briefing.

Zakharova pointed to a recent investigation published in The Times newspaper, which features testimonies from residents of Helmand province, an area heavily impacted by the NATO occupation. The witnesses recounted numerous instances of extrajudicial killings allegedly carried out by members of the British Special Air Service (SAS), often described as being done "for fun."

"We call on London and its NATO allies to stop covering up for war criminals and to conduct an honest investigation," Zakharova declared. She stressed the need for the immediate resumption of an objective inquiry that would lead to the punishment of all military personnel implicated in crimes committed in Afghanistan.

Zakharova also directed her comments towards the newly elected Labour government led by Keir Starmer, highlighting his stated commitment to human rights issues and investigations into war crimes abroad. "This is a chance for the Labour government to prove that their words align with their deeds," she remarked, challenging Starmer to demonstrate his commitment to justice and accountability.
