Russia Negotiates Astana Format Meeting

05 December

Russia is in talks with Turkey and Iran to organize a ministerial meeting in the Astana format on Syria this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced at a press conference.

"We are negotiating with our Turkish and Iranian partners to hold a ministerial meeting this week," Lavrov said, in response to a question about whether an Astana-format meeting is planned at the ministerial level in light of the situation in Aleppo, Syria.

On November 27, extremist group "Jabhat al-Nusra" (banned in Russia) launched a large-scale attack in northern Syria. According to a statement from the Syrian armed forces, the terrorists attempted to advance on villages and towns protected by the Syrian army and military installations. On November 30, the armed forces reported that the army was striking positions of terrorists who had infiltrated several districts of Aleppo and was awaiting reinforcements. According to the Ministry of Defense, the Syrian army was forced to regroup its forces to protect the lives of civilians and soldiers and to prepare for a counterattack.
