In Vienna, the Russian delegation took part in the OSCE Forum for Security Cooperation Forum.
The Acting Head of the Russian delegation, Andrey Vorobyov reported about it. Special attention of a Russian speaker was focused on security in the Central Asian region.
Vorobyov underlined what are required for the radical improvement of the border security situation in Central Asia - the consolidated efforts of many participants and international organizations, including the OSCE.
“The situation, unfortunately, is still far from satisfactory. First of all, the high level of instability in Afghanistan, the activity of radical and terrorist organizations there. They seek to fill the security “vacuum”, especially in the northern regions adjacent to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan”, the Representative of the Russian Federation mentioned.
Currently, at least 5 thousand people, who are directly connected with the terrorist group "Islamic State" (banned in the Russian Federation), are concentrated in the northern provinces of Afghanistan.
According to Vorobyov, at the present time countering the threats connected with presence of extremists is mainly carried out by the states directly bordering Afghanistan.
“At the same time, the Russian Federation, in line with the strategic partnership with each of them, consistently provides assistance in the field of border security and security. We are more than anyone interested in maintaining order and stability in the region, because Central Asia is the “southern gate” to our common security zone with our neighbors”, the Representative of Russian Federation declared.
