Russia Urges Israel to Target Terrorists, Not Civilians

26 October 2023

Russia does not call on Israel to give up the fight against terrorists but asks that the fight does not extend to civilians. Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya made this statement on Wednesday at a meeting of the world organization's Security Council.

"We don't urge you to relent in your fight against terrorism but to target terrorists, not civilians," he emphasized.

Earlier, Israel's Permanent Representative to the UN, Gilad Erdan, expressed his deep shock at the votes cast against the US draft Middle East resolution in the UN Security Council. He directed a rhetorical question to Russia and China, asking how they would respond to terrorist attacks on their countries.

Responding to the Israeli diplomat's comments, Nebenzya pointed out that Russia has experienced multiple acts of terrorist aggression against its citizens, citing examples such as the Beslan school siege, the Budennovsk hospital hostage crisis, and the Dubrovka theater hostage crisis in Moscow. He emphasized that Russia does not engage in dialogue with terrorists.

In the vote on October 25, Russia and China vetoed the US-proposed draft resolution. While ten countries voted in favor of the document, Russia, China, and the UAE voted against it, with two countries abstaining. The new Russian draft resolution was not adopted as a result of the vote. Both the UK and the US, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, opposed the resolution.
