The Russian foreign ministry welcomed the agreement reached between the authorities of the Republic of Yemen and representatives of the Houthis movement Ansar Allah on the exchange of prisoners and detainees. This was reported on the Russian foreign ministry's website on Thursday.
"Moscow welcomes this decision and hopes for its quick practical implementation. We call on the parties to the Yemeni conflict to intensify negotiations aimed at further resolving the problem of forcibly detained persons and other issues of a humanitarian nature," the statement reads.
The ministry noted that the decision will help to build confidence and create a favorable atmosphere for dialogue among all political forces in the country.
On March 20, the internationally recognized Yemeni government and the rebel Ansar Allah (Houthis) movement agreed in Geneva to exchange 887 prisoners.
In Yemen, the confrontation between government forces and the Houthis has been going on since August 2014. It reached its most active phase with the invasion of the country in March 2015 by the Saudi-led coalition. The conflict has led to the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.
